A good treatment at seventy should not be the same treatment as at thirty, delivered more gently. The things worth working on change, the tissue responds differently, and the practical business of getting on and off a bed matters more than it did. Most spa menus ignore all of this. Here is what actually changes, and what helps.
Why treatments should change with age
Three things shift, and they shift at different rates for everybody.
Skin thins. The layer of fat under the skin reduces and the skin itself becomes more fragile, particularly on the forearms and shins. Pressure that was comfortable a decade ago can bruise. This is not a reason for a feeble massage — it is a reason for a therapist who adjusts by feel rather than by habit.
Circulation slows. Hands and feet get colder and stay colder. This is one of the areas where massage does the most obvious good, and it is why the shorter, more frequent treatment tends to beat the occasional long one.
Joints stiffen. Range of movement narrows, often without much pain to announce it. Shoulders, neck and hands are usually first.
Pressure, positioning and time
Pressure should be firm but never forced. Deep tissue work on thinning skin is a poor trade — you get bruising rather than release. Sustained, warm, moderate pressure achieves more.
Positioning is the practical part nobody discusses. Lying flat face-down is uncomfortable or impossible for many people over sixty, whether from a stiff neck, a replaced hip, reflux or breathing. There is nothing unusual about this and it is easily solved with bolsters, a side-lying position, or working seated. Tell us when you book and the room is set up before you arrive rather than rearranged around you.
Time matters differently too. Ninety minutes on a bed can be its own kind of ache. A well-used forty-five minutes is often better than a stretched-out ninety.
What helps most
Neck and shoulders. Almost universally the tightest area, and the one where a fifteen-minute treatment produces the most obvious change. Neck and shoulder massage is R150 for fifteen minutes.
Hands and feet. The most undervalued treatments on any menu. Hand and foot massage improves circulation, warms cold extremities and eases the small stiff joints that make jars, buttons and keys difficult. R150 for fifteen minutes, and it makes a genuine difference to ordinary daily tasks.
Facials, gently. Mature skin is often dry rather than congested, so a hydrating facial at R450 usually suits better than a deep cleanse. Extraction-heavy treatments are rarely what thinning skin needs.
Medication and skin: what to tell us
Please mention these when you book, not as an afterthought on the bed:
- Blood thinners — including daily low-dose aspirin. These bruise easily and we adjust pressure accordingly.
- Diabetes — particularly for foot treatments, where reduced sensation means you may not feel heat or pressure that is too much.
- Recent surgery or a replaced joint — position and pressure both change.
- Varicose veins, fragile skin, or any skin condition.
- Blood pressure, high or low — mostly relevant to how quickly you should get up afterwards.
None of these mean we cannot treat you. They mean we treat you properly. If you are under active care for something and unsure, a quick word with your doctor beforehand settles it — we would always rather you asked.
The Windrush seniors package
R350 for anyone over 60: a neck and shoulder massage, a mini facial, and a hand or foot massage.
It is put together deliberately. Those three cover the areas that stiffen, dry and lose circulation, and none of them requires lying face-down for a long stretch. It is priced so that it can be a monthly habit rather than a birthday event, which is how this kind of treatment does the most good.
If you would rather choose your own combination, that is entirely fine — call and we will put something together.
Bringing someone with you
Plenty of people book this for a parent, and plenty of people would rather not come alone the first time. Both are easy to arrange. If you are booking for someone else, tell us anything about mobility, hearing or medication when you call rather than leaving them to explain it at the door.
If getting from the car is a consideration, say so. We are inside the Rustic Timber Garden Centre at 42 Witkoppen Road in Fourways, parking is close, and it is flat.
How often
For circulation and stiffness, little and often wins. A short treatment every three or four weeks does considerably more than a long one twice a year — the benefits of a massage on circulation are real but not permanent, and regularity is what compounds them.
Call the day spa on 072 928 2596 and tell us what is stiff, sore or cold. We will work from there.
Feet, and why they deserve more attention
Foot care is the part of this that gets least attention and matters most. Reaching your own toenails becomes harder with a stiff back or hips, eyesight makes precise trimming difficult, and the consequences of getting it wrong are more serious than they used to be.
A basic pedicure at R260 covers soaking, shaping, nail trimming and hard skin, and for many people it is far easier than managing it at home. A deluxe pedicure with a paraffin treatment at R340 adds warmth, which stiff joints respond to well.
One important caution. If you are diabetic, tell us before any foot treatment. Reduced sensation in the feet means you may not feel water that is too hot or pressure that is too firm, and small injuries take longer to heal and matter more. We will adjust accordingly — no soaking at high temperatures, no aggressive hard-skin work. Many people with diabetes are advised to have foot care done professionally rather than at home for exactly this reason, but if you are under active care, check with your doctor or podiatrist about what is appropriate for you.
Buying this for a parent
If you are arranging a treatment for a parent who would never book one themselves, a few things make it land better. Book a specific appointment rather than handing over an open voucher, because an open voucher becomes a thing to organise and often quietly expires. Offer to drive. And pick the shorter treatment rather than the grandest one — the seniors package at R350 is far more likely to be accepted, and far more likely to be repeated, than a three-hour half day that feels like an imposition.
Call the day spa on 072 928 2596 and we will help you put something sensible together.
